To the editor:
Susan Draper is up for re-election as Suffolk’s commissioner of the revenue, and she will have my vote.
Some people are all talk but no walk. Susan Draper is not one of them.
I met Susan through my work at a local nonprofit, where she is an active member of the board and a great asset to our team. I appreciate her insights at our meetings and the candor with which she operates. Most of all, I appreciate all the volunteer hours she put into helping those in need in our city.
I have not heard her brag about her community service, so I will do it for her. When no one was watching, and elections was not on the radar, Susan uses her personal time to successfully write grants that have gone to serve residents of Suffolk going through crisis.
This is money that went directly to stopping evictions, housing the homeless and ensuring that families can keep the lights on when they were going through difficult times.
Susan graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, having majored in accounting. She is a Certified Public Accountant. Therefore, she is qualified for the job.
Susan is a determined woman. She was not handed this job; she earned it through hard work and sacrifice. Susan was a machinist for 15 years at the Newport News shipyard before switching careers, and as single mom, she attended Old Dominion University during the evenings, while continuing to work during the day.
