Clarence Arthur King, 92, of 1202 Truman Road, Suffolk, passed away May 22, 2011, in the comfort of his residence. A native of Nansemond County, he was son of the late John Wesley and Sadie Elizabeth Ashburn King.

Mr. King retired from the Virginia Department of Highways in 1990 after 15 years of service. He was a member of Chapel Grove United Church of Christ, where he served as church clerk and financial recorder from 1962 to 2010.

He was the Past Master and Secretary of W.F. Jackson Lodge 96, Past District Deputy Grand Master, 8th Masonic District, 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Fidelity Consistory No. 120, member Nansemond Chapter OES Prince Hall Affiliation, Silver Queen Lodge 1495 GUOFF (Odd Fellows) member over 60 years, served as Noble Grand of the Order, Past Noble Father, Senior Trustee, Lodge Treasurer and Honorary Past District Grand Master.

He is survived by his son, Rutherford “Ulysses” Whitfield, of Suffolk; one sister, Bettie S. Scott, of Chesterfield; one brother, John F. King, of Hackensack, N.J.; devoted nephews, John Wesley King (Linda), Norman King Jr. (Val), Karl King (Vivian) and Prentis King Jr. (Vera); a host of great-nieces and -nephews; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends; caregiver, Larry Outlaw; and close special friends, Hugh and Sarah Lawrence.

The service to celebrate his homegoing will be held will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chapel Grove United Church of Christ, 7366 W. Blackwater Road, Windsor, officiated by the Rev. Carlyle Church and the Rev. Dr. J.J. Ferguson. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
