It was good to honor this hero

To the editor:

For more than 20 years, there has been a monthly breakfast at Bunny’s Restaurant honoring former prisoners of war from World War II.

During the most recent breakfast, we honored our last prisoner of war living in this area, Dame Mary Barracco, who was a French freedom fighter in Belgium and became a prisoner of the Nazis. We celebrated Dame Mary’s 94th birthday while she was surrounded by other veterans and civilian guests.

Our group is smaller now as so many of our POWs have passed on, but we still meet to remember them.

At the beginning of each breakfast, we say a prayer, and together we stand and face the flag of our country and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, we tell stories about our beloved POWs who have passed on and listen to Dame Mary’s stories about her captivity under a cruel Nazi regime and her life as a freedom fighter.

Two special guests joined us this time — Commissioner of the Revenue Susan Draper and Shijuana Ivey, and we thank them both for spending time with us as we honored Dame Mary Barracco.
