The Nansemond River Preservation Alliance will host a River Talk forum this Tuesday at the Crittenden, Eclipse and Hobson Ruritan Hall at 8881 Eclipse Drive, Suffolk.

Ted Henefin, general manager of Hampton Roads Sanitation District, will conduct a presentation on the new research center under construction at the Nansemond Water Treatment Plant for the Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow.

Henefin will answer questions about the $1.1 billion program designed to reduce the amount of nutrients discharged in the James, Elizabeth and York rivers and address the dwindling groundwater levels in the Potomac aquifer, the primary source of groundwater throughout eastern Virginia.

“This is the future, and it’s happening now here in Suffolk,” said NRPA President Elizabeth Taraski. “This research is intended to benefit everyone in Suffolk and throughout Hampton Roads.”

The forum is open to all citizens that want to find out more about SWIFT and what it could mean for them, whether it’s the improvements at their personal wells or changes to their monthly water bills in the near future.

“Hopefully that will also stabilize our monthly bills,” Taraski said. “Advancements in technology at times can have economic benefits for the citizens and what they pay every month.”

The forum will begin with a social at 6:30 p.m. followed by the hour-long presentation at 7 p.m.
