The Genieve Shelter has started a new fundraising campaign to raise money to pay off the mortgage on its emergency shelter building and is kicking it off during October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The goal for the campaign is $170,000, said Marleisa Montgomery, executive director of the Genieve Shelter, which aids victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault and stalking.
“We need all the help we can get,” board member Nora Butler said Tuesday following a check presentation from the Suffolk Ruritan Club, which gave $500 toward the campaign.
The Genieve Shelter has some fundraising initiatives ongoing, including the “Dollar a Day” campaign for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. There is also a GoFundMe page for supporters and businesses to donate.
Meanwhile, the shelter is changing its office location from a North Main Street office to 2480 Pruden Blvd. A ribbon-cutting is set for Oct. 30.
People in need of help should call the regional crisis hotline at 757-251-0144. The Genieve Shelter office can be reached at 925-4365.
