The Lady Knights volleyball team had senior night Tuesday, and six seniors were honored.

The volleyball season for Suffolk Christian Academy is quickly coming to an end. Tuesday night at Wilroy Baptist Church, they hosted senior night against Gateway Christian Academy. Seniors Eva Waddell, Courtney Hayes, Miriam Farmer, Katie Glover, Danielle Ummels, Summer Pasquine and Abigail Francis were honored before the game.

SCA went on to lose the game 3-0, but the seniors played the whole first set. Lady Knights coach Scott Cornette described Tuesday night as an emotional one.

“It was the kind of final recognition, like this is it,” Cornette said. “We have a tournament, and maybe another game and that’ll be it for their high school career. It is certainly bittersweet for them.”

The seniors had a stretch in the first set where they gave up a lot of points but were able to remain competitive. In the second set, the Lady Knights went down as much as 16-3 before putting together a comeback but closed it out at 25-14. The last set was competitive, but like the first set, the Lady Knights had a stretch where they gave up too many points.

“I give credit to the other team, because they were serving extremely well, and we were having trouble returning it,” Cornette said. “But it was a wonderful time; it was good to see these girls and their maturation over the season.”

Cornette has enjoyed watching his players grow mentally and spiritually, watching the team build chemistry while also becoming better individually. Building relationships are essential for Cornette, and this year he felt he was able to instill confidence in the young ladies he was coaching.

“I was able to kind of help validate them in some ways being a male coach,” Cornette said. “Sometimes as a coach you may be that validation they need or that figure they look up to. For me, that has been the best aspect of the season.”

With the season nearing an end, SCA is still looking to get over the hump. Over the last couple of weeks, SCA has had competitive moments during games, but Cornette is hoping the Lady Knights can put it all together in a complete game.

“They still have not realized the potential I know that they have,” he said. “I’ve seen moments when they are really close. They can hold their heads high, because they are always relentless in their effort.”
