A regional organization will hold an event in Suffolk this Saturday dealing with some hot topics.

Immigration, Medicaid and domestic violence all will be on the agenda for the event at Lake Prince Woods retirement community, hosted by the Eastern Virginia Association of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Norman Vick, commission chair of justice and witness for the organization, said the group holds the events every so often on different topics and in different areas of the region.

“The last time we had something back in March, we dealt with mental health and school discipline,” Vick said. “This time, we decided to come cross the river and deal with the churches and communities over in the Suffolk way.”

Vick said Sybil Morrer with the Suffolk Department of Social Services will discuss Medicaid. The Rev. Dr. Laconda Fanning and Dr. Cynthia Banks will talk about domestic violence, and the Rev. Lana Martinez of the Virginia Interfaith Center in Richmond will lead the conversation about immigration.

“I think we definitely have some knowledgeable people who do this because they love it and love people,” Vick said. “It’s a continuation of ministry in these areas. The people and the community at large need to be connected.”

Vick said there is seating for 75 in the room, and “it would be nice to have an overflow.”

The program will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Lake Prince Woods, 100 Anna Goode Way. There is no cost, and no registration is needed.
