All three Suffolk Public Schools football teams took wins in their season openers.

Now that all three Suffolk Public Schools have completed game No. 1 on their schedules, everyone is feeling good. King’s Fork High School kicked things off Aug. 25, taking a win over Wilson High School in dominating fashion. Lakeland High School shared the same season-opening opponent and also defeated Wilson on Sept. 1. Nansemond River High School took care of business against Maury High School on the road last Friday.

With impressive showings from each team, all teams are satisfied with where they are, but know it’s still early, and more work needs to be done. The rushing leader of the three teams is Wali Faulk of Nansemond River. Faulk had an impressive performance last Friday, running for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Every Suffolk team had at least one 100-yard rusher.

The passing leader of the three Suffolk schools is currently Tyquan Holloman of Lakeland. Holloman threw for 300 yards in Lakeland’s season opener.

However, King’s Fork defense has the edge after one week of play due to a shutout of their opponent. What made the shutout so impressive for King’s Fork is that it was on the road. They also turned in a solid offensive performance that has the Bulldogs rightfully optimistic after one game.

Lakeland looks as if it is hungry to continue where it left off in its historic 2016 season. The Southeastern District could be argued by many as the best in the Hampton Roads area, so each team will most likely see a high-quality opponent week in and week out. Lakeland, a Class 3 school, is in the smallest classification of the division and will look to continue to prove how explosive they are among the bigger schools.

Nansemond River, which was without East Carolina University commit Gerard Stringer last week, was able to tough out a win against Maury. After a slow first half, the Warriors turned up their energy, leading to a solid week one victory.

Each team will be in action again Friday. Lakeland will go on the road to face Indian River High School. Nansemond River will have its home opener against Hickory High School. King’s Fork will have its home opener against Western Branch High School. All game times are 7 p.m.
