Get ready for fresh fruits and veggies as community farmers’ markets are ready to open for the season.

Farmers’ markets in both downtown and North Suffolk offer citizens fresh, local food, including produce, meat and seafood, and other products in open air environments.

The Suffolk Farmers’ Market will open May 28 with a kick-off celebration featuring a petting zoo, face painting and live music from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Suffolk Farmers’ Market, which started in 2006, is held at Market Park, across from the Seaboard Station Railroad Museum on North Main Street.

The market will operate on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays 3 to 6 p.m. through the fall.

Kathy Flythe, owner of Katody’s in Governor’s Pointe, said she, Brenda Gillihan of Bon Vivant Market and Ruth DiGeorge of A Tisket, A Tasket decided to start the farmers’ market two years ago as a unique Friday night event for the surrounding community.

“Most of the farmers’ markets are on Saturday mornings,” she said. “We do ours on Friday evenings, and we think that makes it very unique.”

The Governors Pointe shop owners wanted to have a community-oriented place for people to gather.

“We wanted something different and unique to give back to the community,” she said.

Along with locally grown produce, the Governors Pointe market will offer freshly baked bread, organic meat, seafood, baked goods, fresh eggs and homemade relishes, jellies and jams.

The market also features local craft makers, such as jewelry and basket makers, and other community businesses.

Flythe said the market is a place community members can stop by after work on Fridays and pick up the groceries they need for the next week.

“It’s so much nicer when it’s fresh and not from the grocery store,” she said.

Flythe said visiting the farmers’ market is a good thing for families to do together and a great place to take visiting company.

“You can drop in and visit,” she said. “It’s a fun thing to do.”

The Governors Pointe Farmers’ Market will open June 3 and will operate from 5 to 8:30 p.m. every Friday through July.
