Senior Lady Bulldog Camary Harris has decided where to play her college basketball.

Bethune-Cookman University will be getting a strong King’s Fork High School guard in Harris. This week, she decided she wanted to end her college recruitment and take her talents down to Dayton Beach, Fla., in the fall of 2018.

Harris was the starting point guard on an all-time historic King’s Fork girls’ basketball team. She orchestrated the offense and made plays for her teammates, which saw them playing for the 4A state championship back in March. What made Harris’ play so impressive last season was that she worked her way from an ACL injury. Because of her solid play at the point guard position, she started to spark the interest of NCAA Division I coaches. She was offered by both BCU and Hampton University and decided to roll with BCU.

“The reason I decided to go ahead and commit to BCU is because it was a very family oriented environment,” the senior Lady Bulldog said. “Everyone was really friendly and respectful to one another. The women’s basketball program is really good, and the coaching staff is wonderful.”

Harris mentioned that it was a dream of hers to attend a historically black college or university. She felt there were things that she could get there that she couldn’t get anywhere else.

“There’s nothing like an HBCU environment,” Harris said. “The homecoming, probates and stuff like that is unbelievable. You can’t get that nowhere else.”

BCU finished No. 1 in the MEAC Conference last season, which also made Harris realize she was going to be stepping into a good situation. The Lady Wildcats finished with a 21-11 record and were one game out from a bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Lady Bulldog received advice from friends and family before deciding where she wanted to go. Of course, they let Harris know that education is the most important thing. They also mentioned to the King’s Fork senior that she will have to make sacrifices if she wants to be successful.

Suffolk is 10 hours away from where Harris will be attending school. She expects to be homesick at times but knows it is something she can get over.

“It’s always good to try something new, you know? Harris said. “I’m probably going to be homesick, but I will get through it.”

Now that her recruiting process is over, Harris can look forward to what she calls a “smooth” senior year. Her goal is to do what she can to help her team reach the state title game once again. However, this time, she plans on the Lady Bulldogs winning it. Harris had what could have been the game-winning layup to give the Lady Bulldogs the title in the final seconds. Unfortunately, the referees decided that the shot didn’t count.

At Bethune-Cookman, Harris plans to major in sports medicine.
