Suffolk native Sugar Rodgers finished with 10 points in 19 minutes of play in her first WNBA All-Star appearance.

It is safe to say that Rodgers enjoyed her time as an All-Star in Seattle, Wash., last weekend. As a first-time All-Star, Rodgers hit two three-point field goals in her very first appearance.

Rodgers also competed in the three-point contest, where she finished second behind Allie Quigley. It was the return of the competition for the first time in eight years. The former King’s Fork High School standout lit it up the first round, making her first eight three-pointers. Her performance in the first round drew cheers from fellow All-Stars on the sideline and from the crowd. She made nine out of her first 10 shots, which automatically advanced her to the finals.

Quigley went for 27 points in the final round, which gave her the win over Rodgers’ 17 points.

“It was fun. I got my shots up and being able to get to know the girls was amazing,” Rodgers said. “It was fun going out there and shooting the ball in the three-point contest. I think I got some new fans watching now. Overall, it was fun and a great experience.”

The New York Liberty will now be trying to make a strong playoff run in the second half of the season.

Rodgers route to All-Stardom hasn’t been easy at all. She has persevered through the death of her mother while also watching siblings being locked up for selling drugs. A few years ago, Rodgers also survived a home invasion by four men which put her life in danger.

For the people of Suffolk and for the state of Virginia, it is easy to root for Rodgers. Many who watched her grow up know her story along with her being a high-profile athlete from the state. Now that she is consistently on a national stage, the world will be cheering for the first-time All-Star.
