A member of City Council has filed to run against the commissioner of the revenue in her first contested election.

Susan L. Draper is running for re-election in November. Her opposition is Lue R. Ward Jr., who represents the Nansemond Borough on City Council.

Draper was first elected commissioner of the revenue in November 2015 in a special election, held the same day as general elections. She had been serving in the position for a year prior to that, having been appointed upon the retirement of Thomas Hazelwood. She had been the chief deputy commissioner in the office since 2007.

Ward is less than a year into his second term on City Council, having been elected for the first time in 2012 and re-elected last November. He is the founder and publisher of two occasional community newspapers and a magazine, including Suffolk Happenings.

Three other constitutional officers — Commonwealth’s Attorney C. Phillips “Phil” Ferguson, Sheriff E.C. Harris and Treasurer Ronald H. Williams — are running unopposed this year.

Suffolk’s fifth constitutional officer, Clerk of Circuit Court Randy Carter, is not up for election this year. Virginia’s circuit court clerks serve eight-year terms, rather than four-year terms as the other constitutional officers do.
