A jury trial in Suffolk Circuit Court earlier this month ended with guilty verdicts on a number of felony charges against a Suffolk teen.
Martrell Dae’Shawn Beamon was convicted after a two-day trial on charges of rape, sodomy, abduction with intent to defile and three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
According to court documents, the female victim was walking home from work near East Washington Street on Sept. 18 when Beamon pointed a gun at her and sexually assaulted her.
The woman later saw Beamon in the neighborhood, recognized him and called police.
Beamon at first denied the assault, but DNA found at the scene was a match to him, according to court documents.
“Assuming the DNA profile is a mixture of (the victim) and an additional contributor, Martrell Beamon cannot be eliminated as a foreign contributor,” reads a lab report in court documents. “The probability of randomly selecting an unrelated individual … is 1 in greater than 7.2 billion (which is approximately the world population).”
Beamon was 17 at the time of the offense and is 18 now. Sentencing is set for Sept. 6.
