Nansemond River High School’s softball team placed three girls on the 5A All-State teams.
It was a good season for the Lady Warriors this year. After not being a highly regarded team due to the talent that left, they had an impressive season this year. Nansemond River was the PenSouth regular season champion, going undefeated in the conference. The team also was the 5A South region runner-up, earning them a place in the state tournament.
Outfielder Ashlyn Rogers and second baseman Katelyn Biando were selected to the 5A first team All-State. Pitcher Madison Rhoads was named to the second team. Rogers mentioned that she was a bit shocked that she made the first team but gives credit to her teammates.
“It’s great to be recognized for the work I’ve put in, especially because this is my offseason sport,” Rogers said. “I was a bit surprised. I know I’m a good player, but I’m surrounded by many other great players as well.”
Biando finishes her high school softball career as a first team member. Each game out Nansemond River had to prove themselves, and she was happy to be a part of a special team. Personally, Biando felt she had her fair share of ups and downs this season but learned a lot from her teammates and coaches.
“I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my coaches and teammates,” Biando said. “I learned some things that will help me at the next level and in life.”
Rhoads finishes her high school career as the PenSouth Player of the Year and as an All-Region and All-State selection as well. Every Lady Warrior was satisfied with how the season went as a team.
“It was fun coming out and proving ourselves each game,” Biando said. “It led to some really close bonds and friendships. Every year playing there was a blessing, but this one was unique in a good way.”
“Everyone challenged each other while the outsiders thought we were rebuilding,” Rogers said. “We all know it was more than that, and we achieved a lot.”
