Everett P. Raney, devoted husband and father, died peacefully at The Village at South Farms on June 15, 2017. He was 91 years old. Born to George and Willie Raney, he was the youngest of nine children. Everett graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Suffolk, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from D.C. Teachers College and a Master of Science in Business Education from The University of the District of Columbia.

Everett answered the call of duty in 1944 and served as a Cox in the Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he attended Virginia State College in Norfolk and participated in the Civil Rights Movement by challenging segregation on Carolina Coach buses traveling the Suffolk to Norfolk route. His case reached the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals in 1950. He joined the Norfolk Police Department and later moved to Washington, D.C., to serve as a police officer during some of the most tumultuous events of the 1960s.

In November of 1952, he married Ione Juanita Reynolds, daughter of Captain Elijah Reynolds and Maggie McInham. Throughout their 64 years of marriage, they provided a loving and stable home, a college education for both their daughters and grandchildren and supported countless extended family members.

Everett was an Eagle Scout, a member of Delta Pi Epsilon, Kappa Alpha Psi, D.C. Business Education Association and 1983 Educator of the Year with numerous other awards during his 19 years as a business teacher in the D.C. public schools. As educational liaison for the Kappas, he volunteered his time to teach free SAT prep classes for high school students.

Dad will always be remembered for his quiet strength, his humility, his love of peanuts and spicy foods, his generosity, and his signature phrase, ”Raney speaking.” He is survived by his wife Ione, his daughters, Maggaline Robinson and Thelma Halloran, and his grandchildren, Romeo Hillman and Claire Halloran. Viewing will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, at Stewart Funeral Home, 4001 Benning Road NE, Washington, DC and on Friday, June 23, at Hughes United Methodist Church, 10700 Georgia Ave., Wheaton, Md., beginning at 9 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m. and burial.
