Families are invited for a fun day at the park this weekend.

Suffolk Public Library will hold its “Circ Du Library Summer Challenge Kick Off” on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lake Meade Park. The event is free, and the schedule is filled with numerous family activities from community sponsors.

The library moved its regular summer kick-off event from the Suffolk Visitor Center to the playground and wide-open spaces of the park this year, according to Suffolk library services coordinator Shawna LoMonaco.

“We changed it up a little bit this year,” LoMonaco said. “All of the kids are out of school, and we want to make sure that they’re aware of us and that we are a place where they can go and enjoy themselves.”

Paul Miller of Flow Circus will engage audiences in a performance based on his lifelong dreams of the circus.

“He basically narrates his story of growing up and wanting to live his dream of being in the circus,” LoMonaco said. “He grew up going to the library, and that’s where he learned his skills that he shares with the audience.”

A bike parade for children ages 3 to 12 will have them ride loops around the playground. Each decorated bike will be judged and a prize given to the one with the most personality and creativity. There will also be supplies on site for children to decorate their bikes.

The Lynn A. Chiavotti Memorial Fund of the Brain Injury Association of America will be there to educate young cyclists on the importance of wearing helmets. The organization will also distribute its own helmets while supplies last.

Bike repair and maintenance services will be provided by Hund’s ReCycle Factory, and Suffolk police will be present to talk about bike safety.

“They will actually be leading the parade,” LoMonaco said. “Two police officers with brand new police bikes that they’re very excited about.”

The Suffolk Humane Society will promote the BARKS reading program held at the library monthly.

“Some of the therapy dogs that typically come to our branches will be there for children to sit down on a blanket and read,” LoMonaco said.

The Early Childhood Development Commission will have family games, and parents will be able to register their kids for kindergarten at their station.

The event will include a sneak peek of the library’s “Free Skool” program this summer, and it will launch the “Sizzling Saturdays” series of family-friendly events.

“They can join us at the ‘Free Skool’ tent and learn a new skill, or maybe they have a skill that they want to share with us,” LoMonaco said.

Families are encouraged to bring picnic baskets and blankets and accept the summer challenge of finding new and different ways to enjoy the library.

“People really use the library in so many different ways, and we want the community to understand that we have something to offer them,” LoMonaco said.
