As the Nansemond River High School boys’ soccer team prepares for its 5A state tournament game, the players are enjoying everything that comes with the experience.

This could be one of the biggest moments in the school’s history. The Warriors are preparing for a run at a 5A state title, and it all starts with a semifinal matchup against Briar Woods High School.

It’s a big deal, but the Warriors are trying to keep their heads about them.

“It has been a normal week,” coach Dustin Tordoff told his team. “We have gone through our normal routine. At the end of the day, it is just another game. We don’t want the moment to become too big for us. At this point of the season, playing how we play got us here, and we will continue to do that. You know what it takes to play soccer and win. Let’s do it!”

The players have enjoyed the moments that have led to today’s penultimate game of the state tournament.

Tordoff jokes that he and his team look at the game as an awesome field trip. It is about a three-hour and 45-minute trip from Suffolk to Westfield. The team is enjoying everything from the travel arrangements to the eating arrangements. They are the perks that come with a state tournament run.

Nonetheless they remain focused on one ultimate goal, and that’s success.

If the Warriors win on Friday, they will play for a state championship Saturday, which is also the day of Nansemond River’s graduation. The five seniors on this team are excited to have an opportunity to play for a state championship on the same day they should be receiving their diplomas.

This could be the perfect ending to their high school story, along with an absence that will be excused by the whole Nansemond River community.

“There is no better way to graduate than with a state trophy in our hands,” senior Sasha Karlov said. “When everyone is back home getting their names called, hopefully we will be getting our names called for a championship trophy.”

One thing that has been consistent all year is the support the Warriors have received from community, fans, parents and school community. They are behind team — as well as the softball team that will also compete this weekend — 100 percent.

“Everything has been fun,” junior goalie David Wright said. “We all know what we have to do to get the things we all want. Everyone is on the same page, and we just want to enjoy the moment.”

The game will be held at 4 p.m. today at Westfield High School in Chantilly.
