Local police are asking for the opinions of community drivers through a public survey this June.

The Suffolk Police Department posted an online highway safety survey Thursday that will be available until June 21. The survey is a brief questionnaire designed to engage Suffolk drivers that live in the city and those that commute.

“It’s for anyone that travels in the roadways in Suffolk,” said Maj. Steve Patterson of the Suffolk Police Department.

Participants are asked how long they have been driving in Suffolk and where they drive most frequently. There are questions about traffic violations they have witnessed and how they would rate those infractions.

The survey also asks for each participants’ opinions on the quality of traffic law enforcement in the city, which roadways throughout Suffolk require the most attention and other causes for concern.

“We’re trying to see if we can point our efforts in the right direction to try and reduce some high injury accidents,” Patterson said.

Traffic in Suffolk has increased along with the city’s population.

Suffolk’s population grew by 1,157 residents to 89,273 from 2015 to 2016, according to recently released population estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau.

By conducting this survey, police hope to address the traffic concerns of the growing Suffolk populace.

“We’re going to evaluate our efforts to see if we’ve changed that perception and made things better,” Patterson said.

He said that the plan is to collect and evaluate the results, then conduct another survey towards the end of the year to assess the changes in community responses.

“We look forward to getting citizen input to make sure we’re serving the community like we need to,” he said.
