To the editor:

I am concerned that the Trump administration is proposing to review the carbon emissions standards for motor vehicles. Transportation is currently the highest carbon emissions producer, and if this proposal goes through, it will not only catalyze global warming but also threaten the health and well being of the public.

Tailpipe pollution contributes to an array of health issues that are not only harmful to millions of Americans but also account for an alarming portion of annual healthcare costs.

Therefore, it is prudent economically, environmentally and for the welfare of Americans to at least remain steadfast in our current regulations, if not to further our efforts to make cars more efficient.

As a college student, I rely on the government’s fuel efficiency standards for manufacturers to allow me to buy a car that is environmentally friendly. Additionally, the economic benefit of enacting these rollbacks on car manufacturing cities would be minimal at the best.

Although our cars have made significant progress from 20 years ago, as their pollution levels have been reduced by more than 40 percent, they can still be much more efficient.

Scott Pruitt and the EPA should uphold the standards car manufacturers have been held to and reward efforts by manufacturers to make cars more efficient. The American people will be the ones to experience the negative effects of these actions.
