Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s softball team’s dominant season ended Thursday after a loss in the state semifinals.
The Lady Saints season ended with the 3-1 fall to St. Margaret’s School. NSA took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. They kept the lead all the way until the top of the seventh inning. St. Margaret’s doubled off Reese Byrd, which drove in two runs for them, ultimately helping them capture the lead and win the game in the seventh inning.
Byrd and Emerson Puzey had pitching duties, with Puzey getting most of the work. Addy Greene scored the only run for NSA. Five Lady Saints had hits.
NSA finished its season with a 22-3 overall record. Their last loss before Thursday came on March 27 against Great Bridge High School.
The Lady Saints have a lot to be proud of, as they were the TCIS tournament and regular season champions. They defeated top-tier competition within the VISAA Division II. For a few weeks, NSA even took the reins as the No. 1 team in the polls.
The Lady Saints also got their fair share of recognition on the all-conference and all-state teams. Puzey, Madi Currin, Greene and Madi Wilson were a part of the TCIS first team. Byrd, Gabby Infranco and Delaney Taylor received TCIS second team honors.
Puzey not only was named the TCIS Player of the Year but also was named the VISAA Division II Player of the Year as well. Along with joining Puzey on the all-state team, Wilson and Greene were honored as well. Taylor and Currin were named to the all-state second team. All the individual accolades speak to the team success NSA was able to maintain throughout the year.
NSA will likely be expected to have the same success next year. They will only graduate one senior in Taylor.
