Suffolk libraries will partner with the Suffolk Art League for an evening of art through canvas, recording and film.

“The Artist’s Experience” will be held at the Suffolk Art Gallery, 118 Bosley Ave., on May 27. Attendance is free with no registration required, with art supplies and recording equipment provided and light refreshments served for movie watching.

Unlike library events geared towards families, this event is being arranged for those 18 and up.

“Events for young adults in Suffolk can be hard to come by,” said Ashley Reed, library adult services coordinator and co-organizer for “The Artist’s Experience.” “This allows them to come out and socialize.”

Attendees will arrive at 6:30 p.m. outside of the Visitor Center. The Art League will set up art stations with various materials and utensils for a variety of creative expression at no cost.

“You get an opportunity to flex your artistic skills without the cost, mess or preparation,” Reed said.

Staff will be at the event with equipment to record the stories of the artists that attend. These stories will be collected for the “Suffolk Speaks” oral history project organized by Suffolk Public Library.

“We’re hoping that by recording at this kind of event, we can capture different experiences,” Reed said. “Maybe we can capture the experience of artists in Suffolk while having some fun.”

Attendees will proceed indoors at 8 p.m. for a special screening of the documentary “Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry,” which explores one of China’s most famous and controversial artists. Each viewer will have his own takeaway from the film and will come to understand the provocative voice of the featured artist, Reed said.

“We were thinking about artist experiences and voices, and he has a very active voice in China,” she said.

It’s an opportunity for people to sit down and enjoy a movie in a part of Suffolk where movie theaters are scarce.

“It’s the opportunity to sit down with friends and family, and enjoy a film,” Reed said.
