Nansemond River High School’s girls’ soccer team defeated Warwick High School Monday at home to become PenSouth champions.

The Lady Warriors are PenSouth champions and have an automatic bid to regionals after going undefeated in conference play. On senior day, the Lady Warriors got the job done by defeating Warwick 5-1.

Not only does the win make them conference champions but also the Lady Warriors still have only lost one game all season and sit at 14-1. Lady Warriors coach Johnathan Baca is happy with the way the season has gone.

“I’m pretty satisfied with the season,” he said. “Now it is all about taking the next step in the playoffs.”

Three different Lady Warriors scored for Nansemond River, but senior Daijah Norris led the way with a hat-trick. Baca said it has been a pleasure to coach his seniors this season. There were five Lady Warrior seniors this year, and three of them had previously worked with Baca in travel ball.

Though Nansemond River has completed the best regular season in school history, they know they still have room to get better. Out of the 15 games Nansemond River has played, nine of them have been shut outs.

“Soccer is a growing process,” Baca said. “So we always have room to get better. We have come far, but I still think I have big potential in my non-starters. Also, defensively we’ve had a good season, but until no one scores on you for a whole season, you still can improve.”

Everyone has the same goal in mind, and that is the state championship. It has been a team effort all season long, and Baca wants it to continue to be that way.

“We attack and defend as a team, that is why we have been so successful,” he said. “It’s hard to key in on just one or two of us. It’s a total team effort every game, and that’s where the strength of my team lies.”

Nansemond River will now have the No. 1 seed for the PenSouth Conference tournament. They will have a bye in the first round of the PenSouth tournament. There is a good chance that the Lady Warriors will be at home for much of the playoffs.
