A free medical, dental and vision clinic will take place in Emporia on June 24-25, and folks from Suffolk are being invited to attend and volunteer.

Free transportation is being provided from Suffolk to the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps of America clinic, thanks to a grant from the Obici Healthcare Foundation.

The clinic will take place at Greensville High School, 403 Harding St., Emporia.

Elise Brown, a volunteer with Remote Area Medical, said dentists are especially needed to volunteer to provide free care at the clinic.

“We’re always welcoming more doctors and more dentists,” Brown said. “We do not want to turn people away.”

This is the first time Remote Area Medical will serve the Southside area, Brown said. The organization’s longest-established clinic is in Wise in western Virginia, with others in rural areas such as Grundy, Buena Vista, Lee County, Smyth County and Warsaw.

Brown said there are no income or age restrictions on those seeking care at the Remote Area Medical clinic. There will be no appointments set; patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visitors to the event will receive a ticket based on the order of arrival. When their ticket is called, they will go through triage, where 53 registered nurses will be volunteering.

In addition to physicians, dentists and ophthalmologists, specialists such as dermatologists, podiatrists, cardiologists and pulmonologists will be on site, Brown said. There will be a mammogram truck there, and women’s health exams will be offered.

Services include dental cleanings, fillings and extractions, eye exams, eyeglass prescriptions, eyeglass production and more.

Brown said the Lions Clubs from seven different counties are coming to provide eyeglass lenses, and a thousand pairs of new eyeglass frames for children are awaiting distribution.

The clinic will last from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 24 and 6 a.m. to noon June 25. Patients are welcome to arrive early and line up, but they will be waiting outdoors. Patients should bring any prescribed medications they currently take.

Brown said it is important for people to come to the clinic if they feel they need medical care.

“When we take steps to practice preventive care, we have a longer lifespan,” she said. “It’s a great experience. I just want people to show up.”
