The Suffolk Police Department has extended its deadline to submit applications for the popular Senior Citizens Academy. One of the many tools the department uses in its continuing efforts to reach out to the community, the academy offers a unique opportunity for local senior citizens to learn more about the department as well as how to improve their personal safety.

The Senior Citizens Academy will present a number of law enforcement topics and hands-on learning opportunities in the eight weeks of sessions. Topics will include firearms and active shooter response, crime prevention, crime scene investigation, hostage negotiation, the history of law enforcement in America and Suffolk, an overview of police department assets and capabilities and more.

The academy will begin on June 7 and run through Aug. 9, with sessions scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon each Wednesday. The academy is for seniors 55 and up.

Registration is currently ongoing for the academy, which will be held at Suffolk Police headquarters, located at 111 Henley Place. The application process includes a background check, which will be completed on all persons applying to participate. Applicants can complete their application and submit in person or mail to: Suffolk Police Department, Attention: Sgt. James Sobers, 111 Henley Place, Suffolk, VA 23434. All applications are due no later than May 10.
