A Suffolk neighborhood is ready to raise money for charity next week with its annual day of racing.
The Burbage Grant Owners Association’s fourth annual 5K and kids’ 2K will be held on May 6. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. at 6815 Burbage Lake Circle before racing begins at 8:15 a.m. The rain date will be May 7.
The race route will be the same as last year, starting at the Burbage Grant clubhouse, according to activities coordinator and race director Steve Whear.
“The streets have recently been repaved, so it should be a good run surface,” Whear said.
Racers will be provided pancakes and Chick-fil-A biscuits at the event, along with T-shirts and water bottles.
The fundraising will go towards charities selected by the runners themselves. The two most selected charities will receive 20 percent of the fundraising each, while the remaining 60 percent will be divided between the charities of the top male and top female in the 5K and the winner of the kids’ 2K.
Whear expects about $1,000 in proceeds for the event. The event drew approximately 160 racers last year, according to Whear. He said friends and neighbors have consistently enjoyed the camaraderie over the years.
“No matter how large or small it’s been, it’s been a fun event, especially with the camaraderie amongst neighbors after the event with the pancake breakfast,” he said.
Walk-in registrations will be allowed the morning of the race, and those not interested in running are welcome to volunteer for other event needs.
“If anybody wants to come and help out, we would greatly appreciate it,” Whear said.
Registration is $15 per runner. Walk-in registration will be at the clubhouse. Online registration is available here. Email steven.whear@yahoo.com or call 214-4044 for more information.
