Registration is open for the second annual Run Through the Heart 5K and Youth Fun Run, a fundraiser for the Woman’s Club of Windsor.

The race is being organized by Kim Garrett of the woman’s club and Mischelle Goodman, the owner of Anytime Fitness in Windsor.

According to Garrett, the proceeds from the event will be used to work with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia to bring their Backpack Program to Windsor Elementary School. The Backpack Program provides healthy, nutritious food to needy children to take home on Fridays.

The club has made addressing childhood hunger one of its priorities for the year.

This will be the second year for the Windsor 5K.

“Last year’s event was a fun event that raised about $4,000,” Goodman said. “We are hoping to have an even bigger and better event this year.”

The 5-kilometer run/walk will start and finish near Robinson Park next to the library at 10 a.m. May 20. The race will be timed, and prizes will be given for top finishers in each age and gender group at the conclusion of the event.

There will also be an entertainment area for kids 12 and under, and a fun run for that age group will be held at 11 a.m. There will be a beer garden with Smartmouth beers and wine for attendees of legal drinking age. All participants registered by May 3 are guaranteed an official race shirt in their size.

“Together with the ladies of the Woman’s Club, and other volunteers, we are finalizing the plans for the kids’ area and working to secure additional vendors for the after-race party,” Goodman said.
