The Suffolk Police Department is conducting an internal investigation after one of its vehicles was spotted parked in a handicapped spot.

Facebook user Jennifer Peace Walker posted the photo on Monday and said it was at Lakeland High School. She said she often drivers her mother around, as she can’t drive anymore, and has trouble finding handicap parking.

“They would be quick to ticket or even tow if we parked like that,” she wrote.

Among those who commented on the post was Police Chief Thomas Bennett.

“I am in receipt of your photos showing one of my officers parking in a handicap spot,” he wrote. “This behavior is totally unacceptable and there is no excuse for it. We are currently investigating this violation and you can be assured the appropriate discipline will be issued.

“This is the exact type of behavior that gives us a bad name and I will not tolerate it,” Bennett continued. “Thank you for bringing this to our attention.”

He concluded by saying an internal affairs investigator may be getting in contact with Walker.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink had no comment other than to confirm the response was from Chief Bennett and that an internal investigation is being conducted.

Parking in a handicapped spot is punishable by a fine between $100 and $500.
