Nansemond River High School’s boys’ soccer team defeated Churchland High School last Friday.

The Warriors and the Truckers faced off in a non-conference matchup in which Nansemond River took a 4-3 victory. It was Nansemond River’s final game before they start conference play.

“We played hard,” Warriors coach Dustin Tordoff said. “They definitely gave us their best shot. We knew going in it was going to be a pretty physical game. I think the guys did a good job stepping up to the challenge.”

Nansemond River is currently 7-3 heading into conference play. The PenSouth Conference is mostly made up of Peninsula teams. Those teams have gotten a head start on playing each other while Nansemond River has been playing teams in the Southeastern District.

Though there is a bit of uncertainty as far as opponents go, Tordoff likes the way his team has been playing and thinks the Warriors will do well in the conference.

“If we play our game and stick to the things we have been doing, we can be strong in the conference,” Tordoff said.

Every game now counts for the Warriors in dictating their seeding for the postseason. Last week, the Warriors went 2-1 coming off of spring break. The Warriors were able to generate a lot of goals, but defensively they were a bit rusty because of the break. Tordoff believes that the rust is behind them now.

Senior Sterling McGee continued his strong season last week, as he scored six goals in three games. The Warriors are getting through a few injuries right now but feel they will be fine. Senior Nikoli Green has been playing well as of late for the Warriors.

“Last week was a bit difficult with us facing a few injuries,” McGee said. “Overall, I’m proud of all my teammates for the fight and grit we all showed last week. We have been playing well.”

The first three conference games the Warriors have are against the top three teams in the conference from last year. They will take on Kecoughtan High School at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at home.

“We want to make sure when we play our style of play in these conference games,” Tordoff said. “With us being the only team in Suffolk in the conference, the other teams play a different style. I want us to go out and play and not let anyone else dictate the way we play.”
