Blake Sargent was voted the Suffolk News-Herald/Duke Automotive player of the week after going 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a King’s Fork High School win over Deep Creek High School.

Sargent is a senior and pitches for the King’s Fork baseball team, which is currently 6-7. He had a solid game against Deep Creek to help him earn the player of the week honor, an opportunity for which he is thankful.

“I feel very honored to have so much support from my school and the people in my community,” he said.

Sargent has been enjoying a stress-free senior season so far. The work he put in last summer to prepare him for his final season is starting to pay off. He has been spending extra time in the batting cage, so he can be ready for the big moment when his team needs him.

The first thing folks notice about Sargent is that he is competitive. He wants to work hard to do all he can to help his team win. As a senior, his leadership is shown through example. He knows that if his teammates see him working hard, then they will also follow.

His passion for the game comes simply from his love for it.

“I’ve always had a strong desire to win,” he said. “It’s what drives me to be my best.”

His teammates also motivate him. Sargent plays hard every day not wanting to let his teammates down.

Sargent is as efficient as they come at the plate. It is evident by the two runs and two RBI’s he had while going 2-3 against Deep Creek. What it all comes down to is preparation, whether he is just hitting for the day or pitching and hitting.

Before each game his takes some time to get focused. Then he goes through the team’s normal stretching and throwing routines.

One of Sargent’s favorite points of the season so far was the spring break tournament King’s Fork hosted. The Bulldogs came in second place after a championship loss to Oscar Smith High School. However, overall it was nice to spend time with his team over break and play some quality baseball, he said.

In his spare time, Sargent is an avid hunter and fisherman. He also works two jobs on a horse farm and hog farm.

“I really enjoy being around the animals, especially the horses,” Sargent said.

The Bulldog senior is also a Boston Red Sox fan. He will attend Eastern Mennonite University, where he will major in engineering. Before his senior season started, Sargent signed his National Letter of Intent to EMU.

“I found the right school for me, and it allowed me to enjoy my senior season more,” he said.

In his past two seasons, Sargent was a second-team All-Conference selection. If he continues his high level of play, there is a good chance he can make the first team this year.

Sargent and the Bulldogs will be in action against Great Bridge High School at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
