A showdown in Suffolk

A popular Suffolk high school competition will be back for more drums, flags and dancing this month.
The Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department will hold its second annual “Peanut City Showdown” on April 22 at King’s Fork High School. Hundreds of local, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C., high school students will compete with drumline, dance and flag performances.
“It’s an opportunity to showcase talented youth not only from Suffolk, but from other areas,” said Lakita Watson, director of Suffolk Parks and Recreation.
Among the groups competing are King’s Fork High School “Royal Elegance” dancers and Nansemond River High School’s “The Truth and The Proof” drum majors.
The groups will perform and strive for awards that will be given to the top three competitors in percussion, dance and flag categories, plus the People’s Choice awards for percussion and auxiliary.
The People’s Choice awards are for the percussion (drumline) or auxiliary (dance and flag) groups that receive the most crowd response from their showmanship, according to Watson.
Proceeds will raise money for the Student Youth Achievement Awards given to local high school students.
“It gives us the opportunity to recognize young people that are striving and achieving excellence in Suffolk,” Watson said.
She said the competition drew a crowd of more than 350 last year, and the hope is for an even bigger turnout this year.
“It’s family fun, and we encourage everyone to come out and support these talented young people,” she said.
The doors will open with $10 admission at 1 p.m., and the competition begins at 2 p.m.
