The Suffolk News-Herald won 10 awards and Suffolk Living magazine one in the Virginia Press Association’s annual news and advertising contest.

Staff members won five first-place certificates for their work during 2016, along with two seconds and four thirds.

The Suffolk News-Herald is judged in a category with several other small daily newspapers around the commonwealth.

The awards were presented Saturday at the press association convention in Richmond.

Editor Res Spears won first-place awards for editorial writing and feature photography, a second place in column writing and a third place in the general news photo category.

Spears and designer Jen Jaqua shared a first-place award for specialty pages.

Spears, Jaqua and former intern Henry Luzzatto shared a first-place award in the combination picture and story category for coverage of a National Guard homecoming.

Jaqua led a staff effort that won a first-place award in the special sections category for the newspaper’s annual Strides special.

News editor Tracy Agnew took second-place honors for her government writing and won third place in the breaking news writing category.

Agnew shared a third place award for multimedia coverage of a Black Lives Matter march in Suffolk with Luzzatto and former reporter Sterling Giles.

Troy Cooper, designer for Suffolk Living magazine, won a third-place award for design and presentation in the specialty products category.
