Suffolk will celebrate Spring with competitive trucks in the mud next weekend.

The second annual Suffolk Peanut Fest Mud Jam will be held Saturday at the Suffolk Municipal Airport off Carolina Road. Gates open at 10 a.m. for attendees to enjoy numerous exhibitors and sponsors, and the competitions will be start at 1 p.m. The event ends at 6 p.m.

“We’re just now getting back outdoors after an unusual winter,” Suffolk Peanut Fest publicity coordinator and Suffolk city tourism manager Theresa Earles said. “This will be a kickoff to the whole season.”

Attendees can enjoy cold beverages with funnel cakes, kettle corn and barbecue while they browse exhibitors’ wares. Arts and crafts will be available for families, and children will enjoy “marshmallow tactical supplies,” festival director Lisa Key said.

“You should expect a wonderful family friendly day with big trucks in three feet of sticky mud,” Earles said.

The competition arena will be open for a “pit party” before 1 p.m. to allow attendees to get closer to more than 50 drivers’ trucks, according to Ken Whitley, Big Daddy Motorsports Inc. owner and co-organizer for the event.

Competitions will include timed jump courses and “sand drags.”

“It’s like drag racing on sand instead of pavement,” Whitley said. “It’s a crowd-pleaser.”

Trucks will be organized into five different classes, ranging from street trucks to an “unlimited class.” Unlimited-class trucks could have engines with more than 2,000 horsepower engineered by the drivers themselves, Whitley said.

“A lot of the people that are competing in these classes build their own stuff,” he said. “They’re mechanically inclined by trade.”

He said Mud Jam was organized this year because of the surprising success last year.

“We didn’t expect that many to come to the first show,” he said. “It was a good turnout.”

Admission will be $15 in cash at the gate, and kids under 6 will get in for free. Earles said that the money raised will help Suffolk’s Peanut Festival in October.

“The more people that participate in Mud Jam only improves the quality of Peanut Fest,” she said. “It’s a win-win.”
