Four displaced in fire

A family of four was displaced after a fire at their home off Nansemond Parkway Thursday evening.
The fire was reported at 5:22 p.m., and the first units arrived at 5:30 p.m. in the 4100 block of Berwyn Way, according to a city press release. The residents had evacuated prior to the arrival of firefighters.
Crews found heavy smoke and a kitchen fire that had extended into the attic. The crews were able to rescue a Labrador retriever from the home, according to the release.
The fire was called under control at 5:58 p.m. and has been ruled accidental. There were no injuries. The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The roadway was closed at the intersection with Nansemond Parkway, and traffic alternated lanes until it reopened about 6:50 p.m.
