Editor’s Note: According to school division Finance Director Wendy Forsman, Superintendent Dr. Deran Whitney already makes $200,000, so only a 1-percent raise is proposed for his position. The school administration’s released budget document lists his salary prior to a raise that occurred during the current fiscal year.
The Suffolk School Board is set to receive public comment on its budget Thursday night.
The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at Nansemond River High School, 3301 Nansemond Parkway.
The $160 million budget includes an average 2.4-percent raise for school system employees, with higher adjustments at the bottom of the teacher scale to aid recruitment efforts. The proposed budget also includes a 14-percent raise for the superintendent’s position, from $177,043 to $202,000.
The budget proposal has increased about $4.1 million from last year.
The change includes nearly $1.6 million from increased lottery funds, more than half a million provided by the state for fringe benefits and other state increases.
An additional $2 million is requested from the city of Suffolk, which provided $53.8 million last year.
