Despite shorts-and-T-shirts weather for part of this week, the weekend will arrive with a chance of some snow, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Tuesday.

“Things are trending toward the snow side,” Lyle Alexander said Tuesday afternoon. “Right now, we’ve got snow likely in the Suffolk area for Saturday night and Sunday morning, possibly mixing with rain before it ends Sunday.”

Alexander said it is too early to predict accumulation totals with any accuracy. The amount of accumulation is going to depend on the low temperature and the amount of precipitation. The low temperature on Sunday morning is forecast to be 34 degrees, which would limit any accumulation.

After a warm Tuesday, the high Wednesday was predicted to be in the 60s, with a high Thursday in the 70s.

“We have a couple cold fronts coming in,” Alexander said. “We start to cool off Friday. The coldest day coming up is on Sunday.”

Alexander noted that while snow in March isn’t all that unusual, it certainly seems that way after so many warm days in February.

“We don’t have snow every year in March, but that’s more typical than all the 70-plus-degree weather we had in February,” Alexander said.

This February was the second-warmest on record for the Richmond and Norfolk metro areas, Alexander said. February 1890 remains the warmest.
