Amesha Miller was voted Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week after carrying her team to a 2-1 record during the 4A East regional week.

Amesha Miller is a senior forward for the King’s Fork High School Lady Bulldogs basketball team. She is enjoying a senior year in which her team was Conference 17 champions and 4A East regional runner-ups. They also have a chance to compete for a state championship.

She scored in double figures in all three of the Lady Bulldogs’ regional games, helping them to a state tournament berth. In the championship game against Monacan, the Lady Bulldogs took a loss, but Miller put up an impressive 30 points, leading all scorers for that game. King’s Fork had beaten their previous two opponents by an average of 30 points.

Many people expected King’s Fork to be in this position after a strong season last year. So far this season, Miller has been an all-conference and all-region player and a conference player of the year. All those accolades are great, but Miller just wanted to lead her team to success.

The senior vividly remembers how she felt when the Lady Bulldogs lost in the 4A state semifinals last year and knew that was a feeling she never wanted to experience again.

“I definitely wanted to lead my team to a state championship and win it,” Miller said. “If along the way I had received other accolades such as player of the year or something, I would be happy with that, but I just want to help my team any way I can.”

The ultimate goal is a championship, and she is motivated by her team. Miller wants to get better at any cost. In the fall, she ran cross country to help build her stamina and endurance for her senior basketball season. She is ecstatic about what she has accomplished in her senior year to this point.

Miller draws inspiration from many things. Her parents are both former basketball players — her mom played in college, and her father played in the military. They both inspire her to be the best she can be. Sugar Rodgers, current WNBA player and King’s Fork legend, was someone Miller watched as a little girl.

“Watching Sugar Rodgers play motivated me,” Miller said. “I knew that King’s Fork was the school I was going to, and she made it to the WNBA with hard work.”

WNBA all-star Candace Parker is also Miller’s favorite player. Before her senior season even started, the Lady Bulldogs senior was being heavily recruited by NCAA Division I programs. She made her decision before the season started to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the fall. With Miller being regarded as one of the top players in the Hampton Roads area, she has embraced being held to a high standard.

At UNCG, she plans to major in biology. She is excited about all she can continue to accomplish at King’s Fork and for what her future holds at UNCG.
