A popular culinary event from years gone by in Suffolk is coming back this year.

The Nosh on the Nansemond originally took place annually from 2004 to 2007 as a United Way fundraiser. It raised about $100,000 for the United Way during those four years, according to Tom Powell, who is promoting the event.

Its reincarnation this year is a result of the Rotary Club of Suffolk looking for a new fundraiser, said Win Winslow, a member of that club.

“The Rotary Club gives away about $42,000 a year in scholarships and grants to local nonprofits,” Winslow said.

But how to raise the money has been a source of debate. In recent years, the club has sold raffle tickets for cars, motorcycles, souped-up golf carts and all-inclusive trips to Disney World.

“Getting people to get out there and sell the tickets is painful,” Winslow said.

Recently, somebody said, “What if we brought the Nosh back?”

So the event is happening from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at Constant’s Wharf Park. Tickets are $25 each.

“It’s a culinary tasting event,” Winslow said. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

About 20 restaurants will participate and will offer selections for judging. A panel of food judges, including local favorite Patrick Evans-Hylton, will choose first-, second- and third places for the judges’ choice and most creative awards. There will also be people’s choice awards.

“This is a great way to indirectly support nonprofits here in Suffolk and to network,” Winslow said. “This is a great way to be involved and come out and be a part of the community.”

Tickets are expected to go on sale April 1.
