Susan Simons Barnes

Susan Simons Barnes, 70, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2017.

She was born in Suffolk on Dec. 24, 1946, to the late Edward O. and Louise G. Simons.

Susan is survived by her husband Joseph E. “Joe” Barnes; brother Phillip G. “Phil” Simmons and his wife Donna; son Joseph C. “Joe” Milburn and his wife Lisa; daughter Melissa A. Milburn; and grandchildren Greyson Milburn and Johanna Milburn.

Sue, as she was known to by her family and friends, lived her entire life in Suffolk, where she served her community in many roles, from being a “den mother” and Troop committee member for Pack 10, to serving as a member of the Junior Volunteer Service Corps and Junto Womens Club.

She returned to the workforce by joining the Suffolk News-Herald as a runner and moving to selling advertising for the Market Basket and then all other advertising venues. After retiring from the Suffolk News-Herald, Sue became more actively involved with Oakland Christian Church serving on many different committees and in a variety of roles.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. There will be a private graveside service for immediate family, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Oakland Christian Church, 5641 Godwin Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the building fund of Oakland Christian Church in her name.
