Lakeland High School’s girls’ basketball team had two players receive all-conference recognition this season. Kayla Barnes was named to the first team, while Deja Freeman was an honorable mention.

Barnes led the Lady Cavs in scoring this year as a junior and calls making the all-conference team a good honor. She also had a career high of 40 points against Booker T. Washington High School this season.

Lady Cavs coach Brandey Blunt says it has been a great seeing Freeman develop from her senior year until now. Freeman is also highly respected for being helpful among her teammates.

“Deja had never played before in her freshman year,” Blunt said. From her freshman year to her senior year, she has developed into a player with true athleticism is satisfying.”

“I’m proud of Deja,” Barnes said. “She has improved a lot. If I needed a rebound or blocked a shot, I know she could get it. If I were down, Deja would help me through whatever it was. Deja is a great leader and sister on and off the court. I will miss her and hope she continues to play.”

Though the Lady Cavs will be losing Freeman to graduation, Barnes will be back at the helm next year, ready to take the Lady Cavs to new heights next season.

“It has been rewarding watching both of them grow as players,” Blunt said. “I’ve enjoyed coaching them over the years. Both of them are great kids with a lot of potential. I’m excited to see what the future holds for both of them.”
