Girl Scouts get their cookies

More than 1.3 million boxes of Girl Scout Cookies arrived in the greater Hampton Roads region last weekend.
Nearly 900,000 boxes of those cookies were distributed among troop volunteers at three pick-up locations on Feb. 18 in less than seven hours. Girl Scouts have begun delivering cookies that customers ordered in January. Last Sunday, Girl Scouts began setting up cookies booths to sell the treats outside of local stores and businesses.
“Our troop volunteers arrive at specific time window at a site in either Chesapeake, Newport News or Virginia Beach to drive through the path of tractor-trailers loaded with cookies,” Tracy Keller, CEO of Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast, said.
“Our goal is to have each car checked in, loaded up and driving away within 10 minutes. This happens with precision, thanks to great volunteer groups who help us load cookies into cars, trucks and trailers.”
This year, volunteers from Kappa Epsilon Psi, Kohl’s, Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, Thomas Nelson Community College and the USO helped with cookie arrival. Cookie Captains, teen Girl Scouts who mentor younger Girl Scouts during the cookie program, also helped load cookies into cars.
In addition to the three main cookie pick-up sites, more than 100,000 boxes of cookies were delivered and unloaded with the help of Girl Scout volunteers in outlying areas, including Isle of Wight, Franklin, Gloucester and northeastern North Carolina.
Girl Scout Cookies will be on sale through March 26. Customers can find a cookie booth near them by visiting www.girlscoutcookies.org and entering their zip code.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the nation’s leading financial literacy and entrepreneurial program for girls. Through the program, girls learn skills that will last them a lifetime, such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.
