The Lady Warriors defeated Warwick 53-24. It was also senior night for the Lady Warriors, who recognized the team’s four seniors — Cassidy Simmons, Tashira Burch, Nijha Shannon and Daijah Norris.

“All of them came in together,” Lady Warriors coach R. Calvin Mason Sr. said. “They have been the cornerstone for what we have done for the last four years. I couldn’t have asked for any more than I’ve gotten out of them this season. They have worked hard every year and have done everything you can ask for as a coach.”

Simmons led the way with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists.

“My senior night was great,” Simmons said. “I’m going to miss playing in that gym.”

Nansemond River has clinched the No. 1 seed in the Conference 10 tournament and has also received an automatic bid to the regional tournament. Last year, the Lady Warriors were co-champions with Bethel High School. The two teams had a playoff game for the No. 1 seed, which went to Bethel. This year, the Lady Warriors clinched the No. 1 seed in what Mason calls the “right way,” meaning Nansemond River won the regular season outright.

The Lady Warriors’ last loss came to Warwick on Jan. 14 in the King’s Fork Showcase.

“At that time, we were not playing well,” Mason said. “We had a meeting. We ironed some things out. We concentrated as a team and did what we needed to do as a coaching staff. Right now we are playing the best we have played all year. It’s been a good group.”

Because Nansemond River is the No. 1 seed, they will have a first-round bye in the Conference 10 tournament. They won’t play again until Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Menchville High School.
