Cleanup of Saturday morning’s derailment of a Norfolk Southern train carrying coal will continue Monday, according to city officials.
Suffolk Police Department says the 300 block of Wellons Street, as well as the crossing near Saratoga Street and Hall Avenue, will remain closed Monday as cleanup efforts continue. All other affected roadways are now open.
The derailment happened in downtown just before 7 a.m. Saturday. The eastbound train included two locomotives pulling 161 rail cars, all filled with coal heading to Norfolk for export, said Susan Terpay, director of public relations for Norfolk Southern. She said about 44 of the cars derailed.
