The Nansemond River boys’ basketball team defeated First Colonial Thursday evening, breaking a 14-game losing streak.

The Warriors got a 58-46 win in their last home game of the season, finishing a tough run on a high note.

After the first quarter of play, the Warriors were down 9-8. But in the second quarter, they really picked up the pace, hitting 8 of 13 shots from the floor and rallying to a 19-point second period.

“The kids really hustled,” Warriors coach Ed Young said. “There was a lot of excitement in the gym. We were pumped up, and the crowd was into it. The seniors really were active and played well for us.”

At halftime, Nansemond River led 27-23. The Warriors stretched that lead to 39-31 by the end of the third quarter, and then they kept their foot on the gas for the win.

“The kids were able to execute what we needed to do at the time we needed to do it,” Young said. “Our defense was great. We executed the game as needed.”

First Colonial had three players scoring in double figures for the season, but Nansemond River was able to keep each of them from reaching those marks on Thursday. Defensively the Warriors were able to get their hands on 33 deflections and forced 24 turnovers.

Dy’Quan McGhee led the way in scoring for the Warriors with 14 points and four steals. Gerard Stringer added 11 points, and Jeremiah Lewis finished with seven points and eight rebounds.

“The win was great, and the energy was amazing,” McGhee said of the Senior Night victory. “We played for each other out there. I felt like I gave my team my all and motivated my teammates, whether I was in the game or not.”

Nansemond River started three seniors — Dy’Quan McGhee, Nate Foster and Jared Henderson.

“My senior night was great,” Foster said. “Glad to have family and friends there, even though I didn’t play my best. I love to see my team get a win.”

Nansemond River will face rival Lakeland for the second time this season tonight at 6 p.m. at Lakeland.

Lakeland won the first meeting by one point, which should pose for a just as exciting matchup this time around.
