Nansemond River High School’s swim teams swam to victory over rival King’s Fork High School last Saturday in their final regular season meet of the year.

With wins for both the girls and boys team, this marks the best regular season to date for Nansemond River.

Combined, the Warriors finished first in 21 of 22 events. The boys’ team finished with a 6-2 regular season, while the girls’ team finished with a 5-3 regular season.

“It feels really good to know that even though we lost some of our best swimmers, that we can still be one of the top teams in our conference,” the Warriors’ Brandon Eubanks said. “Everyone improved through practice, and that was key to our success.”

Eubanks feels that both teams are swimming their best at the right time. With regional and state meets approaching, both teams are riding high on a historic season.

Last year, Nansemond River graduated nine of 20 swimmers on the boys’ side and 11 of 20 swimmers on the girls’ side. It was expected to be somewhat of a rebuilding year for the Warriors, but instead it turned into a quite successful one.

Warriors swim coach James “Shamus” Riley knew halfway through the season that the school record for regular season wins was within reach. He didn’t want his team to become distracted by chasing the record. Instead, he wanted them to continue on with what they were building, and both teams did.

Allen Zachary has qualified for the 50-meter freestyle at the state meet. Clay Bennett has numerous regional cuts, as does Eubanks. Parker Doleman and others have also added to the success of the boys’ team. Shelby Heyman, Danae Martin, Carley Bennett and Katelynn Kreutter have all been an integral part of the girls’ team success this year.

Both teams were able to get victories over schools they had never beat in previous seasons. The boys’ team beat Western Branch High School for the first time in school history, while the girls’ swim team defeated Great Bridge High School.

Nansemond River will compete in the Conference 10 swim championships on Friday at the Midtown Community Center.
