The sixth annual polar plunge for Special Olympics in Eure, N.C., has been slated for Jan. 28 at Beaver Lake.

The $35 registration fee will earn participants a jump in the lake and then a piping hot bowl of chili to warm up. For a $75 donation, participants can jump off the pier to kick off the plunge.

Teams are also welcome. Creative costumes and names are encouraged, but not required. Teams registering with their name by Jan. 19 will be featured on the back of T-shirts as “Freezin’ for a Reason” teams. Teams with creative costumes, names and presentations will compete for the traveling trophies.

The cost of registration for a team of up to six is $300; teams with up to eight members can register for $400; and teams with up to 10 members can register for $500.

The Ice Cube Cub Challenge is $15 for kids 8 and under, and they can jump either into the kiddie pool or lake.

Even if you’re not up for a plunge into the water, you can participate in the chili competition. Donate 15 servings of your best chili recipe in a crockpot for a chance to win a Chili’s gift card and the claim to fame. Chili must be brought and registered no later than 10:30 a.m. to be considered for judging.

Breakfast and other concessions will be available for purchase, as well as chili. Several vendors will be there, so bring your donation for Special Olympics and some extra spending money.

All proceeds from the challenge and the plunge benefit Gates County Special Olympics directly. Volunteers are welcome and needed.

Registration begins at 10 a.m., with opening ceremonies starting at 11:30 a.m. at Beaver Lake, home of Beaver Lake Ski Club.
