A two-vehicle crash caused the partial closure of Pruden Boulevard and Robs Drive on Tuesday afternoon.
The crash happened about 12:51 p.m. in the 3300 block of Pruden Boulevard, according to a city press release.
The accident involved a pickup truck and an 18-wheeler tanker truck that was hauling about 8,000 gallons of fuel, according to the release.
Preliminary investigation found the pickup was stopped at a red light when the tanker truck swerved to avoid striking the truck. It still hit the back corner of the truck before leaving the roadway and landing upright in a ditch, according to the release.
The driver of the tanker was transported by ground ambulance to Sentara Obici Hospital, according to the release.
Since the tank was not punctured, there was no fuel leak, according to the release. Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews were assisted by Portsmouth Fire and Rescue Hazmat and two private tankers to safely offload the fuel before the tanker was removed from the ditch.
A portion of Robs Drive was closed for several hours during the cleanup, as was one westbound lane of Pruden Boulevard.
The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
