Church plans coat giveaway

Suffolk Christian Church plans its annual coat giveaway soon and is seeking donations of new or gently used coats as well as volunteers for the days of the giveaway.
The church will distribute coats on Jan. 21 from 9 to 11 a.m. and on Jan. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m.
“Anybody that needs a coat is welcome to come,” said Beverly McGahee, the organizer of the drive. This is the 27th year the church has conducted the coat giveaway.
Unlike past years, these are the only days coats will be available. In past years, they have been given out on a Saturday and then on a few subsequent weekdays.
But, as it turned out, McGahee said, more people were showing up on the weekdays, when fewer volunteers were available.
Coat donations are accepted all year long, McGahee said. The church works with Quality Cleaners to clean the used coats.
“We especially need the extra large coats,” McGahee said. Sizes up to 4X are especially needed.
McGahee said the church welcomes area teachers to come on distribution day and select coats for children in their classroom who are in need of them.
The church also accepts cash donations for the drive and goes out to buy new coats in sorely needed sizes.
