Police investigate attempted robbery

Police are investigating an attempted bank robbery that happened in downtown Suffolk Thursday afternoon.

The attempted robbery occurred at the Xenith Bank in the 100 block of Bosley Avenue, according to a city press release. The bank reported the incident at 1:04 p.m.

According to the press release, officers were told that a male attempted to enter the bank with his face covered, carrying a handgun and carrying a small, black zipper bag.

Staff locked the suspect in the vestibule, and he fled the building on foot, according to the release. Officers canvassed the area but did not locate the suspect.

No injuries resulted from the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male, about 5 feet, 9 inches to 6 feet tall, 170 to 200 pounds, wearing light-colored jeans or gray jogger-style sweatpants, a black zipped-up hooded sweatshirt cinched around his face, and black tennis shoes.
