Christopher Newport University’s softball team won an NCAA Regional Tournament for the second straight season last weekend with four straight wins in Salisbury, Md. CNU’s 4-0 run included a 13-inning win and back-to-back wins over host and top-seed Salisbury.

The Lady Captains beat Emory 7-3 in 13 innings in the second round. Second baseman/fifth-place hitter Jennifer Falin was 0-for-5 in the game before hitting a walk-off grand slam to win the game.

CNU went on to beat Salisbury 7-3 and 19-3 to finish the tournament and move on to the NCAA Div. III Softball Championship in Salem.

Junior Maggie Farris (King’s Fork) is a first baseman for the Lady Captains, having played in 28 games this season.

CNU (35-10) met Eastern Connecticut State in the first round in Salem Friday evening. Eight schools are playing a double-elimination tournament for the national title.

Norfolk State senior John Rasberry (Lakeland/Greenbrier Christian) earned first team All-MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) honors as the Spartan clean-up hitter and leftfielder this season.

Rasberry, who started his college career at Delaware Tech before transferring to NSU, hit .358 with six doubles, three homers and 30 RBI and made just one error in the outfield for the regular season.

Rasberry went 3-for-5 at the plate with four runs and two RBI as the No. 4-seeded Spartans (22-27) beat No. 3 North Carolina A&T 14-4 in the first round of the MEAC Tournament at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Wednesday.

NSU faced Delaware State in the next round of the conference tourney Thursday evening.

Boston College junior Brittany Wilkins (Nansemond-Suffolk) finished the softball season with 13 home runs, the second-most homers in a single season in BC softball history and one homer shy of the school record.

BC’s season came to a close with a loss to North Carolina in the first round of the ACC Tournament last Friday.

In addition to the homers, Wilkins, a third baseman/catcher, also hit .317 with nine doubles, 32 runs and 30 RBI.

VMI swept a Big South series against visiting UNC-Asheville last weekend in Lexington.

Senior designated hitter Justin Topping (Nansemond River) went 3-for-8 with four walks, four runs, four RBI and his first home run of the season during the three Keydet wins.

The Keydets (25-22-1, 12-12) host a three-game series against High Point this weekend then head into the Big South Tournament, also in Lexington, starting Tuesday.
