Nansemond River High School went on the road to Great Bridge and lost a close game, 62-58, on Friday.

After showing significant signs of progress against a very good Western Branch team last Tuesday, the Warriors took a step back against Great Bridge.

Nansemond River started off the game slow, being down 16-9 after a quarter of play. Great Bridge opened the game with an 11-2 run, and the Warriors were never really able to recover. Going into halftime, Nansemond River was down 34-25.

“We came out very lackluster, with lack of focus,” Warriors coach Ed Young said. “We missed a few defensive assignments that didn’t help us.”

After three quarters of play, the Warriors were down 49-41. In the fourth quarter they outscored Great Bridge 17-13 helping them put forward a comeback effort, but it wasn’t enough.

“We made some huge strides after that Western Branch game,” Young said. “But we didn’t have enough fire with in us during the game Friday night. We didn’t have the same intensity we showed in the beginning of the week.”

The Warriors did have a lead of two points late in the game but it wasn’t for long.

Josh Hale led NRHS in scoring, with 18 points, three assists and three steals. V.J. Wilkins came off of the bench with 12 points. Gerard Stringer had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Warriors go to 1-6 on the season. Next week they will have a showdown with Suffolk rival Lakeland Dec. 21. The game will be at home for Nansemond River and is set to start at 7:15 p.m.
